Italy-Uruguay preview - World Cup 2014

Italy-Uruguay preview - World Cup 2014

This is going to be one of the biggest matches of World Cup 2014. Two traditional football powerhouses of Europe and South America lock horns in a winner-takes-all contest. Defeat is not an option for either team. In Uruguay, even a draw would spell doom. Uruguay must win this match to move to the second round, while Italy – thanks to their superior goal difference – can afford a draw.

Italy-Uruguay Preview

Both the sides have an identical record in the world cup. They beat England and lost to Costa Rica. Italy appeared calm and composed against England, but churned out a tired performance against Costa Rica. Uruguay was without Luis Suárez against Costa Rica and with him against England. The difference Suárez brings to this Uruguayan team was all there for everybody to see. He scored both the goals against England. In fact, those were the only two genuine chances the team had.

Italy’s defence is far better organized than England’s. So Suarez and co. can expect a sturdier resistance. What would worry Italy is the form of their strikers. Mario Balotelli is the only genuine goal-scoring hope for Italy. If he is in full flow, even Suárez will not be able to rescue Uruguay. Otherwise, Italy may join the other European football giants in the Brazilian airports.

Players

Captain Diego Lugano and Alvaro Pereira are doubtful starters for Uruguay. Both the players have minor injury concerns. Italy, on the other hand, has their full strength squad available for selection.

Italy-Uruguay Prediction

This is a tough one to predict. The Uruguayans play with their heart and the Italians with their brain. In crunch matches like this one, heart usually triumphs over brain.
