The champion of the 2013/2014 season of Spanish Primera, Atletico Madrid came into the new season with high ambitions. However, good will wasn’t enough as Atleti had two heavyweights, Barcelona and Real Madrid, as their biggest title rivals. At the end, Atletico Madrid ended on the 3rd spot, but that also wasn’t easy as Valencia and Sevilla were breathing by their neck for the whole season.
When Atleti won the title in 2013/2014, their key player was Diego Costa. However, in the summer 2014 transfer period, they sold him to Chelsea. It seemed they would have a lot of problems without him in the squad, but Atletico brought several players as a replacement. The most important one was Antoine Griezmann, who managed to establish himself as the most lethal player of Atletico Madrid with 22 goals. Atletico also brought Mario Mandzukic, Raul Jimenez and a few more high-quality players, spending a total of €106.5M during the summer 2014. In January this year, Fernando Torres joined Atletico on a loan spell, making their attacking line even stronger.
Despite the fact that Atleti had so many high-profile players in their attack, they scored way less goals that their biggest rivals, Real Madrid and Barca. The strongest weapon of the Atleti was their defense. They allowed only two goals against Barca in league games and just one against real Madrid. In fact, the biggest success of Atletico in 2014/2015 season was the 4-0 victory against Los Blancos, in February.
