Brazil-Mexico preview - World Cup 2014

Brazil-Mexico preview - World Cup 2014

This game could potentially decide the group toppers. Both the teams have won their opening fixtures – Brazil a controversial win over Croatia, and Mexico a comfortable win against Cameroon. Both the games were marred by poor refereeing. Brazil gained from the officiating mistake, while Mexico suffered from it. Whoever wins this game can almost seal their berth for the next round.

Brazil-Mexico Preview

These two teams are familiar foes. Contrary to popular perception, Brazil does not have any dominance in the H2H statistics against Mexico. Both the teams have won four games each in the last 10 matches between them. But Brazil has a clear dominance in the world cup matches, having won all the three games against Mexico. A caveat should be added here: all those three games were held in 1950s and 1960s.

Brazil was good in patches in their opening match against Croatia. Fred and Hulk were anonymous against Croatia, and Neymar and Oscar saved the day for their frontline. Mexico’s defence is not as solid as Croatia’s. But their attack is certainly better. Their 1-0 scoreline against Cameroon is somewhat misleading. Giovani dos Santos alone had two goals disallowed in that game.

Whatever be the outcome, this match could potentially become an exhibition of Latin American flare and skills.

Players

The spotlight will be on Fred and Hulk. There are replacements waiting in the bench. If they have another anonymous game, the pressure will mount on them as well as on the team.

Mexico once again will rely on Santos. He had a good game against Cameroon. He would like to do well against his father’s homeland.

Brazil-Mexico Prediction

Brazil is likely to emerge victorious, mainly due to the superior skill of its strikers.
