Another battle of dour defending is on the cards as the Chelsea host Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi final on this Wednesday. The first leg at Madrid ended in an unexciting goal-less draw. Chelsea, playing at home, does appear to have the advantage in the second leg. However, if Atletico manage to score a goal, then Chelsea will have no other option than going all out for a win.

Chelsea got a huge boost in confidence in the weekend, as they defeated Liverpool at Anfield 2-0. They managed to tame one of the best attacking units in Europe at their own den. Chelsea’s defence absorbed everything Liverpool launched at them, and ruthlessly exploited Liverpool’s defensive lapses. They would be adopting a similar strategy against Atletico too.

However, the Spanish league leaders have a far more efficient defence than Liverpool’s. Their 1 -0 away win over Valencia in the weekend is yet another proof of their defensive capabilities.

With both teams excelling at relentless defending, the match could turn out to be who-blinks-first tug of war of a football match.

If Eden Hazard regains his fitness for this match, Chelsea will start as favourites. Chelsea have other players of great calibre, such as Samuel Eto'o, Oscar and Andre Schürrle. But Hazard is someone who can toy with even the best of defences.

Atletico have no injury worries. Diego Costa and the rest of the usual suspects will start.
