Chile-Australia preview - World Cup 2014

Chile-Australia preview - World Cup 2014

This is the first potentially sure bet of the World Cup 2014. Chile is all set to score a thumping win. If Australia manages to win this one, or even hold off the South Americans, it will be a minor miracle. The Socceroos could end up as the punching bag in a tough group comprising Spain and the Netherlands, apart from Chile.  The only good thing for Australia is that everybody expects them to lose – and even lose badly – and they can play without any tension.

Chile-Australia Preview

Chile, however, cannot play without any tension. They must win this one. They usually play a cavalier brand of attacking football. Their modus operandi leaves plenty of space in their own half. Australia does not have enough firepower to exploit the gaps anyway.

The Chilean players have declared that they are here to win the world cup. But their primary aim will be to qualify to the next round from a difficult group. A rampaging win over Australia will set the ball rolling for them.

Players

Chile boasts of some exciting attackers who have lit up the Italian and Spanish leagues last season: Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas. Vidal is a doubtful starter for this match, as he is still recovering from a knee injury. Chile relies on teamwork and all their players have the traditional South American virtues of insane ball control and sudden flights of creativity.

Australia has an ageing set of players, with Tim Cahill still being the lynchpin of their attack.

Chile-Australia Prediction

This is not going to be complicated: Chile to win after a rain of goals.
