Switzerland - France betting tips and preview

It’s the final games of Group A. France meets Switzerland at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille and Romania clashes with Albania in Lyon. France has already ensured their pre-quarterfinal berth and Switzerland too has practically one foot in the next round.

This match will determine the group winner. The winner has the luxury of playing against a third-placed team from Groups C, D or E. While the second-placed team will most likely run into Robert Lewandowski and his Poland team, or worse Germany. A win here will brighten France’s title hopes. Bookmakers put their faith in France, as bet365 has odds of 5/1 for Switzerland win.

Switzerland

Switzerland won against Albania, but drew with Romania. They have just managed two goals so far. A team comprising some excellent attackers like Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka and Stephan Lichtsteiner, these are meagre returns. Teams normally do not expect to come out of goal-scoring slumps in the game against France. Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic is more worried about blocking France’s attacks than about his own side’s goal-mouth inertia.

Memories of a 5-2 thrashing by France in the 2014 World Cup will be still fresh. But the coach shrugged it off: "There is just today and tomorrow for me. We'll try to achieve the maximum here and now. I don't think the result in Brazil will have an impact. It's a new game, with a new mindset, new morale and new formations.”

France

France will be looking for a similar big win here, as it would provide momentum to its knock-out phase journey. France has not set the field afire as their fans and many experts predicted before the tournament. Still, they have done just enough to gather three points. Romania offered spirited challenge in the opening game, which France won 2-1 thanks to a late goal by Dimitri Payet.

Antoine Griezmann and Payet scored in the final moments of the second match to secure an eventually comfortably looking 2-0 win over Albania. They need a convincing win before the knock-out round – more for self belief than for anything else. They would expect goals from somebody other than Payet too. It is time Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial or Olivier Giroud add their own names to goal-scorers’ list.
