Belgium-United States preview - World Cup 2014

Belgium-United States preview - World Cup 2014

This is the last match of the pre-quarterfinals of the world cup, and the winners in all likelihood will meet Argentina in the next round. The USA has been one of the surprise packages of the tournament. They lost against Germany in the last group match; but they beat Ghana and held Portugal for a 2-2 draw. Even in their defeat against Germany, their ability to spring quickfire attacks stood out.

Belgium’s performance too has been a bit surprising. Their young brigade was supposed to light up the tournament; but the team has failed to justify the hype, in spite of stitching together a three-match winning streak.

Belgium-United States Preview

Belgium has won most of the recent matches between these sides, especially in friendlies. However, the USA won the only world cup clash against Belgium. That should not boost their confidence or any betting predictions, because it happened in 1930, in the very first world cup.

Still, the USA has excellent chances of repeating that win. They played lively football right through the tournament. Great runs, fluid passing and clinical finishing have been their attributes. In contrast, Belgium played monotonous soccer in their matches. Curiously, they scored only in the second half in each of the matches.

Players

The US side has some selection headaches. Jozy Altidore is back to fitness and likely to pair with Clint Dempsey. The team has to accommodate Jermaine Jones in the attack too. Michael Bradley is the only struggling player in the team. He tends to lose possession at critical moments.

Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku came to this world cup with high expectations and huge fanfare. This could just be the right time to justify their pre-tournament billing.

Belgium-United States Prediction

The USA will offer a tough fight, but Belgium is likely to prevail in the end.
