Marseille ended their winless streak of five matches with a 3-1 win over Ajaccio last week at Ligue 1. They would want to make it the beginning of a final flourish to the season that will realise their remote chances of securing a Europa League berth. Montpellier too scored a win last week after a barren spell of five games. But they are in no position to dream about bigger goals in the season.

Marseille are fifth in the league, as the team trails St Etienne by seven points and Lyon by three points. These three teams battle it out for the fourth spot in the league, which would secure them a Europa League berth. Marseille appeared to have excused themselves from the battle, having suffered a string of poor results. But the last week’s win should have rejuvenated their fading hopes.

The team does have a good record against Montpellier, having won eight of the last 12 games. Montpellier’s form in the season too has been distinctively lacklustre. Save for the 5-1 win over Lyon early in the season, they have never got going against the bigger teams.

Florian Thauvin’s injury is a concern for Marseille. But they will expect Andre-Pierre Gignac and Dimitri Payet to fire. Victor Hugo Montano is a doubtful starter for Montpellier. They always do well when the striker Rémy Cabella performs well.
