What Is a Patent Bet?

A Patent takes 3 selections and turns them into 7 separate bets: 3 singles, 3 doubles (every pairing) and 1 treble (all 3 together). Because it includes the singles, just 1 winner out of 3 is enough to get some money back — the other 6 lines can all lose and you still walk away with a return from that one single.

Bet Type Selections Bet Lines Min. Winners
Trixie 3 4 2
Patent 3 7 1

Same 3 selections as a Trixie, but a Patent adds 3 singles for full cover — costs more (7x stake vs 4x) but pays out on just 1 winner. See our full bet calculator for every bet type.

How Does the Patent Bet Calculator Work?

The calculator builds all 7 bet lines from your 3 selections and totals the stake and return across them:

  • 3 Singles — each selection on its own
  • 3 Doubles — every pair of your 3 selections
  • 1 Treble — all 3 selections combined
  • Total Stake = Unit Stake × 7

Enter your 3 sets of odds — fractional or decimal — and your unit stake, and the calculator works out every combination for you.

£10 £70

Each Way Patent Bet Calculator

An each way Patent doubles the total stake, since it runs a win Patent and a place Patent side by side — 14 bet lines in total. Tick the E/W box and enter your each way terms — the calculator works out both parts separately, then shows the combined return.

Example Calculation

3 selections at 2/1 (3.00), 3/1 (4.00) and 4/1 (5.00), £1 unit stake (£7 total):

  • 3 singles: £3 + £4 + £5 = £12
  • 3 doubles: (3.00×4.00) + (3.00×5.00) + (4.00×5.00) = £12 + £15 + £20 = £47
  • 1 treble: 3.00 × 4.00 × 5.00 = £60
  • Return if all 3 win: £119 (£112 profit on £7 staked)

FAQs

Is a Patent bet calculator free to use?

Yes. Every calculator on this site, including the Patent bet calculator, is completely free — no account or sign-up needed.

How many winners do I need for a Patent to pay out?

Just 1 of your 3 selections. Even with the other 2 losing, the winning single still returns something.

What happens if one of my selections is void?

Most bookmakers treat a void selection as a non-runner and recalculate the Patent as the equivalent smaller bet on the remaining 2 selections — check the specific bookmaker's rules for exact treatment.

What's the difference between a Patent and a Trixie?

Both use 3 selections. A Patent is 7 bet lines (adds 3 singles) and pays out on just 1 winner. A Trixie is 4 bet lines (no singles) and needs 2 winners minimum — cheaper, but less cover. Use our Trixie calculator to compare the two.
