Nigeria-Argentina preview - World Cup 2014

Nigeria-Argentina preview - World Cup 2014

Argentina, and Lionel Messi’s brilliance, stands between Nigeria and a berth in the round of 16 in World Cup 2014. After a disappointing opening match against Iran, which ended in a goal-less draw, the Super Eagles stormed back into contention with a 1-0 over Bosnia. Now, a draw could earn them a berth into the next round, while a win will make them table toppers. Incidentally, if Iran fails to win against Bosnia, Nigeria will go through even if they lose

Nigeria-Argentina Preview

Argentina has won both their matches so far and ensured a second-round spot. However, the results are a bit misleading. Their performance was patchy against both Bosnia and Iran. Only Messi’s sudden bursts of brilliance saved them on both occasions. Even Messi was subdued in these games, save for the goal-scoring moments.

Argentina would want a confidence-boosting win ahead of the knock-out matches. They must win or draw to keep their top position in the group.

Nigeria plays a fast and physical game, based on solid defending. Argentina’s misfiring strikers are likely to run into yet another solid defensive unit.

Players

Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero have been the pale shadows of their European league selves in the tournament so far. Argentina will go into the knock-outs with a better frame of mind if one, or both, of them explode into top form.

Nigeria’s defence, led in the midfield by John Obi Mikel, is strong. They have not conceded a goal yet. It is the attack that appears their weak link. Victor Mosses appeared off-colour and not fully fit. Peter Odemwingie, who replaced him in the match against Bosnia, scored their only goal in the tournament so far. Emmanuel Emenike will be itching to score his first goal of the tournament.

Nigeria-Argentina Prediction

None of the teams are prolific in front of goals. Under 2.5 goals is the best selection for this match.
